History

Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a Spanish explorer, visited San Diego in 1542. He claimed the bay for Spain and named it Alta California. In 1769, a fort and mission were established, and the settlement slowly expanded under first Spanish and then Mexican rule.
As the city developed, it became a major port and center for military activity. Civic leaders actively lobbied the Navy and the federal government to make San Diego a base for naval, marine, and air facilities.

Climate
San Diego has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and dry summers. This is due to the city`s latitude (32 degrees north) and proximity to the sea, which gives the area a mild temperate climate.
During May and June, the area occasionally experiences marine layer clouds which cause cooler temperatures, cloudy weather, and fog in the morning. This weather is known as “May gray” and “June gloom”.
The temperature isn`t too high here, and it rarely gets above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). However, it does rain on average 250 millimeters (9.8 inches) per year, which is a bit more than most cities in the United States.
The city`s geography (the Bay and hills, canyons, mountains) means that San Diego`s climate can vary greatly across short distances. The “May gray/June gloom” period is when the thick “marine” cloud cover keeps the air cool and damp within a few mile of the coast. However, the clouds will give way to bright, clear sunshine inland between 5 and 15 miles (8 or 24 km). El Cajon and Santee, for example, are rarely affected by the cloud cover.
