Whaley House

Whaley House was built in 1857 and is the oldest brick two-story structure south of Monterey. This Greek Revival-style home, built in 1857, was originally the home of Thomas Whaley from New York. He arrived in San Diego to take advantage of the gold rush.

It was the meeting place of San Diego`s elite and was known for being one of the most beautiful houses in Southern California. It was also used as a courthouse, granary and store.

Swimming Pool for Children

Located below the bluffs at the northern edge of La Jolla, Children`s Pool was conceived as a safe swimming area for children by local philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps. She funded the construction of a curved concrete breakwater to shield young swimmers from dangerous crosscurrents.

Children`s Pool was a popular swimming area in the 1930s. However, the area was soon taken over by seals and sea lions.

Visitors to the beach now flock to watch harbor seals and sea lions bathe, play, and even give birth to their pups. This has led to a heated debate between animal rights advocates and those who want the beach to remain as an area for children to swim in.

Sea Wall

Riprap and sea walls are used to protect the coast from erosion and reduce the impact of waves. These structures can be found along the coast close to many homes and blufftops in San Diego.

These devices can cause beach erosion in certain cases, and they are generally banned by the Coastal Commission and environmental groups. These devices are often built by homeowners on public land, which effectively transforms beaches into private property.

Oceanside resident asks the Coastal Commission for approval to build a seawall on his property. He is concerned about the deterioration of his shoreline as a result of the rising tides.

He is requesting that the Coastal Commission approve a sea wall to fill a gap at 245 Pacific Ave., which sits at the end of an eroding seawall that also protects dozens of other homes in the city. In September, the Coastal Commission refused to grant his request. It stated that the gap of 50 feet would have to be filled in.

Mission Bay

Mission Bay, the largest man-made water park in the United States, is surrounded 27 miles by meandering shoreline, with many waterways, inlets, and islands. You can also find many beach communities here, perfect for water sports like sailing, camping, and other activities.

There are an estimated twenty sandy beaches and eight approved swimming areas that stretch along the bay`s 27-kilometer shoreline. The west end is where you will find a variety of channels and islands for waterskiers and windsurfers.
